A Montreal, Quebec Canada may be well forced to shut down almost 25 per cent of its beds. In the past number of years, nearly half the doctors there — 25 of them– have resigned as a result of difficult working conditions, but only several have been hired as replacements.

Doctors are said to be working extra long shifts and overtime to provide medical care. “This cannot go on for long without a reduction of the standards of medical care and expertise” states the hospital administration. The hospital will need in order of 20 to 30 doctors to keep this regional center open. Doctors as if seems are in overall short supply.

The Montreal area hospital has had to reduce its level of service to the community at large. Service was reduced in order that the remaining doctors would only have to “work 12 hours or less a day, if possible,” he said.

The impact of the hospital’s decision to close the beds as of Friday is yet unclear.

“There might be longer waits in the emergency room for the patients, as well some of the ambulances may have to be rerouted to other hospitals which, for some patients, might mean being further away from home,” Keyway said.

But while some people at the hospital say it’s frustrating that the beds must close, they understand the reasoning.

“You can’t push staff beyond their reach either … if closing 30 beds allows them to give safe care, it’s too bad, but I guess that’s the way it has to be done,” one woman told CTV Montreal.

The beds might be closed at the hospital for as long as a year.

Medical Tourism is Becoming More and More of a HealthCare Option

Posted on 15 March 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

Patients can save as much as 80 percent on procedures done by medical professionals often educated and trained in the United States at hospitals increasingly accredited for meeting U.S.-like standards.

An estimated 150,000 people traveled abroad last year for medical treatment, and the number is expected to double by 2010, said Josef Woodman, author of “Patients Beyond Borders: Everybody’s Guide to Affordable, World-class Medical Tourism.” Nearly half had medically necessary surgeries, such as hip replacements or spinal work, heart surgeries, even cancer treatment.

The book, released in March, tells how patients can save 25 percent to 75 percent on anything from LASIK eye repair to neurosurgery by traveling outside the United States.

Health-industry representatives said U.S. healthcare costs more, in part, because of skyrocketing medical-malpractice insurance and the higher wages and benefits paid to hospital workers.

Costs are high, said Woodman in a telephone interview, “because Americans demand from cradle to grave the most expensive treatment, the most extensive testing.”

He said the American healthcare system is “stuck” because insurance companies are dictating what can and can’t be covered, and consumers are unable to negotiate direct payment to providers.
A longtime surgeon and clinical professor for UC San Francisco’s Fresno-based medical education program, said that while he has been all over the world and knows there is great medical care available, he advises caution.

He said there are also plenty of Third World countries with hospitals and doctors that don’t meet U.S. guidelines and restrictions but offer huge discounts. Hospitals here have to meet certain standards, he said.

Those who choose to go abroad? “I think it is probably dangerous, and you are probably taking a risk with your life. I think you should find a way to get it done at the good hospitals in town,” Parks said.

Woodman has traveled abroad for his own care. He went to Costa Rica for dental work — a root canal, implants and follow-up care — after looking at several other countries. He said he saved about $2,000.

The key to a good experience, he said, is to do your homework, find out about the doctors, try to interview them beforehand, and then ask about success rates and find out about the facility. “If they don’t speak English, then move on.”

Interest in traveling abroad for medical treatment has spawned a new industry: medical tourism. Companies are playing the role of travel agent and medical-care coordinator and linking American patients with overseas hospitals for a fee.

Is Medical Tourism Only Overseas Travel ?

Posted on 27 February 2009 in Uncategorized by admin

It is an interesting point or points of view or what might call perspectives.

Medical tourism or “medtravel”  or  “medical tourism / medtravel”  often is not most times refers to people , patients or their families traveling to far off , what were once backward third world places , to get medical treatment or medical treatments which they either cannot afford to get “back home”  or are too far down the list or que.

Medical tourism can now refer to medical treatment in the good old USA.

It is now accident that often the most wealthy and powerful come to the US for treatment.

The choice of oil rich sheiks , with no shortage of cash and money to burn , – ever,  used to be “private British ” health care clinic or private British hospitals.  It was closer and more familiar to the colonial past .  However , or in spite of this many of the wealthiest people in the world now routinely , as a matter of course , to American hospitals for their medical care – be it John Hopkins , the Mayo Clinic , Sloane-Kettering or a myriad of others.

In addition to that many who holiday in the US – say for warmer Florida in the winter are already there , so to speak.  Travel costs are already covered , as well as a stay away from home in nice surroundings.  Even friends or family can visit for a stay – and have minimal costs .  Hence these areas , Florida included , have incurred a resulting boom in medical care to those who are not their direct population and citizenry.

These too can be termed “medical tourism”  or medical tourism medtravel even home in the USA.

Medical Tourism Stats on the Increase

Posted on 19 September 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

Medical tourism is a topical subject.  It depends on which side of the fence you are on – patient , patient with or without adequate funds , on what side of the “patient que”  you are on , or is there at queue at all.  People travel to foreign countries for products or services all the time .  Whether it is someone seeking jewelery or even a salami that is not available “at home”  or a Canadian on their way to purchase a Canadian NAFTA Canadian made Toyota only to discover that when the costs are all counted they are ahead of the game financially and even had a sort of holiday or vacation to boot.  It may be true that the lovely people at the border may make your like difficult, even if you are well prepared – but at the end of the day you have your car and your savings and that’s  that.

Medial tourism is no different.  Patients travel to foreign countries in order to receive medical care or medical care , or pharmaceuticals  that are not available at home , at a price they can afford , the wait time is too long , or perhaps they wish to have their medical services , and their recovery period away from prying eyes – often in the case of cosmetic surgeries.

In fact , the numbers bear up the increased popularity of “medical tourism”.  Recently Deloite – the international respected consulting firm came up with the conclusions that during the fiscal year of 2007 an estimated 750,000 Americans travelled abroad for medical care.  In fact the prevailing estimate that by the year of 2010  the number of American medical tourists may swell to 6 million patients.

Medical Treatment Costs – A Relative View

Posted on 14 September 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

To many overseas , or even in Canada , the concept of not being provided with medical care – uninsured or not insured , or not being able to afford medical care may sound unlikely or even preposterous.   Yet it is the sad fact for many in the United States.  On top of that health care costs themselves in the U.S. compared to other places are relatively much higher.   This is said to be the result of many causes – not one in themeselves.    It costs money to run a business – especially in the states.  Doctors not only have to be paid relatively large pay scales compared to the U.K., Europe and Canada and yet their costs are not small .   Doctors have to pay substantial costs for health care insurance due to the plague or almost an industry of lawsuits against them.  It is said that having 2 lawyers in a town increases the total costs of legal services and  total services used immensely .  Imagine a whole industry based on seeking lawsuits against medical practitioners.  Its defensive medical system at its finest.  On top of that add other costs – costs of modern equipment , running a hospital often with unionized staff .  On more point is the cost of administration – both in the medical insurance plans and companies for administration and non payment and collection of bills to doctors.

What is interesting is that even though patients and health care consumers in other countries with socialized or public health care believe all in all that their healthcare is “free”  even though they may be subsidizing it greatly with tax dollars either specifically collected for that purpose or from general tax accounts – from say gasoline taxes or income taxes.

Even though these citizens may be astounded that someone in America will gladly pay for medical treatment in their countries the actual consumer may see it as a tremendous bargain and value when all costs are counted up.   Its similar to a Canadian citizen making a special trip to farwaway Texas or Florida to purchase a automobile to bring it back to Canada.  Even though the car may be manufactured in Canada under free trade Nafta rules when it is all said and done they may be greatly ahead in the bargain – even when including travel as well as other costs.  To boot they even get a sort of vacation away from home during the cold Canadian winter.   The Canadian car industry may not like it , however you cannot  “have your cake and it too”.  If these local north american industries wish to benefit from the economies of scale that a free larger market provides for , they cannot pick and choose what rules and procedures they wish to follow and which they don’t.  The only people in the equation who may be perplexed may well be the customs officers at the Canadian border who when finding that even when the rules are followed , they cannot stop the process.  It is all perfectly legal and proper.  If the customs agent was not suave enough to use those same rules – and even contacts to obtain a similar bargain that is their issue and not one of the thorough and determined modern consumer.

Medical tourism not only has beneficial effects for patients treated or their families.  Medical tourism can be credited often with quicker access to medical care – in effect jumping the cue.  Medical tourism may also afford more privacy to patients in cases of cosmetic surgeries.   In addition medical tourism may also provide for care to be provided , due to reasons of cost so that treatment which may not of been affordable to the patient – either the surgery itself , or a fuller treatment or convalescent time is made available and within the budgets of the patients and their families.  Often as well somewhat of a vacation is provided to the patient and their families as an added bonus.

One often unstated and unappreciated benefit of medical tourism is to provide positive competition for medical care at home – this especially relates to the medical care in the United States – which is primarily a private , for profit , health care system.

Having an option of medical tourism provides competition to the standard health care systems.  We all know that compeition results in “things getting better”.   Whether in the case of lemonade stands,  the American automobile industry or medical care competition usually , if not always results in improvements in delivery systems , product quality and offerings and service levels.   Established players are put back in the game to “watch the ball”  or “watch the puck”.  The cannot get complacent.  If they have gotten complacent or even cocky – then there is a new kid in town to keep them alert .  In essence if you were referring to a controlling pseudo-managress with an attitude problem at your local bank – its as if you told her “there are no shortage of other banks to go “.

It can be said that under communism everyone had a job in Russia but no one had enough to eat.  Competition helps to keep everyone in check , productive and providing higher levels of service.

So is it with the positive effects of medical tourism even on medical treatment  “back home”.    Your health care coverage and costs may well benefit from medical tourism even if you never leave home or “the farm”.

Medical Tourism then and Now

Posted on 12 May 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

It used to be that “medical tourism” was only for the wealthy rich who wanted or felt they needed “Cosmetic Surgery”

In addition you had the benefit of being far away from home , where hopefully nobody would spot you, in your recuperative phase after your cosmetic surgery. Things have changed now. Perhaps its the high cost or long wait lines – even in places where medical care is “free” such as Canada. Canadians themselves have finally come to the conclusion that medical care is limited. If you want service you well have to go out of the country. Previously it was the USA only. Now that medical tourism has become more readily available and trusted medical tourists will travel across the world to get major – even life threatening surgery. Major operations such as hip replacement , cardiac surgery and even transplants – heart etc are not out of the question.

It used to be that once a student from the so called “third world” went to the west for his or her medical education – they were now a doctor in the USA or Canada never to return home- ever , except for holidays and vacations. Now with modern communication and transportation this is not necessarily so. On top of that equipment and such things as reliable electric power are available in these places overseas. Hospitals indeed may be close to state of the art – but certainly new. Equipment may be brand new and indeed better than that found in the USA and certainly in most cases in Canada. On top of that the hospitals are almost like 4 star hotels – staff is cheap , they love their high tech jobs . To them these are the best jobs in the world. On top of that union labor strife is not an issue . Staff at even these new mega , almost factory, hospitals have staff that are used to a slower pace of life. To most patients they are amazingly friendly and concerned as well for patient welfare. Most patients are very satisfied with their medical tourism adventure and exercise and will gladly recommend it to other potential patients as well – be they family , friend or people at work.

Valid Concerns and Issues Involving Medical Tourism

Posted on 28 February 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

There are a number of valid concerns regarding medical tourism that should be addressed before medical and procedure as well as travel plans are put into place.

In many cases the reasons for choosing medical tourism and having a medical or surgical assessment or procedure done outside your home catchment area involve questions of cost and economy. In other cases its to get the procedure done more rapidly ( to jump the que) . In the cases of a business person they can often more than justify costs spent in terms of return on their income – not being disabled or inconvenienced by a surgically repairable illness or to linger with a given medical condition. In other cases the procedure may be done away from home for reasons of privacy and confidentiality.

Remember that in the end its your health and life that is on the line. Unless standards and what one might call”workmanship”- in both technical expertise of the medical staff – including doctors , specialists , nursing and hospital staff etc, is not up to “snuff” , then the whole exercise will be a wasted effort , false economy. Potentially it can even be a tragic or even lethal result for yourself or members of your family.

First of all remember that traveling abroad to get medical care goes both ways. The door swings in both manners. When among the most wealthy in the world , say for example oil sheiks , need medical care , the choice , more often than not , are prestigous American medical and hospital facilities such as the Mayo Clinic or Rochestor Minnesota , or John Hopkins in Baltimore Maryland. The United States and its medical system is a very common and standard destination for people of means and wealth who seek what they perceive and regard as the very best care in the world for particular health problems and concerns. Indeed for these people of wealth and/or power , money is of no object – its the highest level of health care that they seek.

Medical tourism is not new. While the term “medical tourism ” may be of recent origin the whole idea of traveling abroad to seek less expensive or more rapidly available medical care is not. Some can even trace the original concepts and practices of what we now regard with the standard term of “medical tourism” all the way back in history to the ancient Greeks.

It all sounds great . Medical tourism seems on the surface to be a win-win situation for those patients and customers who wish to avail themselves of these services. The patient gets served and serviced. They get their medical needs taken of at less cost , or quicker. In the process they both save money , have their procedures completed. On top of that they may have a “free” enjoyable vacation and may reside in hospitals with decor , food and service levels akin to that of a 5 star hotel.
