Mumbai Terror Attacks Having an Effect on Medical Tourism

Posted on 13 December 2008 in Uncategorized by admin

The Mumbai terrorist attacks are taking a toll on medical tourism , its volume as well as promotion.  This is of course occurring directly in the Indian subcontinent but is also being reported as an effect as well.

Directly patients from Muslim based countries , such as Pakistan , are not only having concerns about completing or initiating therapy and therapies  but even are having trouble obtaining visas.  Muslims from other countries have concerns as well in traveling to the Indian subcontinent.

In addition there is a general fear of international travel as a result – not only to India but what might be considered “third world destinations”.  What used to be considered most safe and even quaint may not be now.

Even though attacks have occurred in all the major industrial countries – be it the US with 911 , Spain or the UK with the tunnel bombings , some medical patients and their families reason that it may well be safer to “stay at home”.  The devil you know seems to be always safer and more familiar than the devil you do not.

Cost and convenience is one factor – safety and personal safety is another.  Convalescence time may be extended and prolonged and on top of that should not be stressful.

It can be said that “time heals all”.  This may well be the situation with medical tourism – the business itself , trends and image.  The initial shock will fade over time , other factors such as Que time and costs will sink back into place.  In the end things will be as they begun.
