Medical Tourism can mean a whole host of things to different people.

Medical tourism may mean travel to a far away place to have medical treatment or a medical procedure done at less cost than “at home”. It may availability of a medical procedure in a foreign land that may unavailable in the home country. It may mean a vacation that is paid for by a reduced price of a medical service so that the vacation trip “is just thrown in.” Ot it just may “be for fun”.

It has been said that medical tourism can be defined as provision of “cost effective ” private medical care in collaboration with the tourism or hospitality industry for people and patients needing surgical and other forms of specialized medical treatment and therapies.

Medical tourism is not new by any means. People have always sought new and diffirent medical care “over there” Medical tourism has been previously associated with either patients in desperate conditions such as cancer seeking ” quack” therapy in places such as Mexico , which is just across the border from the United States. Next medical tourism was associated with “jumping the que”. Canadians fed up with long waits for specialized medical treatment or tests have long made the trip to Buffalo or grand forks feeling that their money was well spent to reduce their anxiety over long waits for test results or reduce treatment . Or the patient wanted the procedure done so they could return to better health sooner. Either way this was considered as “medical tourism”

With modern communication – such as satellite and internet along with the modern tourist and aviation / travel /hospitality industries the twinning with advanced healthcare expertise and advanced healthcare facilities treatment of patients from the industrialized , advanced countries, can now be provided in what were formerly considered third world or “backward” countries medical care and therapies of a mainstream model can now be provided faster , proficiently and in a less costly , cost efficient less expensive manner.

Medical tourism is here to stay.
